Clothed By His Love

robe7

The Bible doesn’t say much about what Jesus wore – with a notable exception.

John tells us that at Calvary “They…took his robe…it was seamless, woven in one piece from the top” (Jn 19:23 NLT).

It was traditional for Jewish mothers to make these garments as gifts for their sons who were leaving home. So while we don’t know if Mary actually made Jesus’ robe, it was likely a cherished possession.

It’s also significant because throughout the Bible clothes symbolize behavior and character. Peter writes about being “clothed with humility” (1Pe 5:5 NKJV); Paul says, “Put on [Christ likeness] like…new clothes” (Gal 3:27 NLT).

Like His robe, Jesus’ character was seamless, integrated and perfect. The words “woven from [the] top down” indicate that He was always directed by the mind of God. In fact He said, “The Son can do nothing…only what he sees the Father doing” (Jn 5:19 NRS).

But when Jesus was crucified He set aside His seamless robe, “changed places with us” (Gal 3:13 NCV), and put on robes of sin that had our names on them.

He died like a common criminal for sins He didn’t commit, so that we could wear the garments of His righteousness. So that sinners like us, coming to the cross, could leave wearing the “coat of His…love” (Is 59:17 NCV), the belt of “goodness and fairness” (Is 11:5 NCV), and the “garments of salvation” (Is 61:10 NIV).

Just think:

Not only did Jesus prepare a place in heaven for us, He made sure we’d be properly dressed for the occasion.

  1. Susan, that's just BEAUTIFUL! I was looking for a scripture that your post reminded me of. As hard as I tried to use JUST the one scripture.. well, I just can't! The WHOLE passage is SOOOO GOOD! ☺

    2 Corinthians 5
    The Temporal and Eternal

1For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2For indeed in this house we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven,

3inasmuch as we, having put it on, will not be found naked.

4For indeed while we are in this tent, we groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be clothed, so that what is mortal will be swallowed up by life.

5Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge.

6Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord--

7for we walk by faith, not by sight--

8we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.

9Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.

10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

11Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences.

12We are not again commending ourselves to you but are giving you an occasion to be proud of us, so that you will have an answer for those who take pride in appearance and not in heart.

13For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you.

    14For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died;

15and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.

16Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer.

17Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

18Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation,

19namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

20Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

21He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him

Thank you SO MUCH for the beautiful picture of what CHRIST did for us!

    I ♥ YOU! ☺

  10. Susan, I am continually amazed at what He did for me. Will I ever grasp it all? As much as it humbles me here on earth, it's likely that I won't realize the fullness of it until I reach Heaven. The glimpses I get of it now are awesome! Beautiful post and picture. Wonderful Scripture, too!

  12. Hi there Susan,

I've missed blogging and visiting. My new job is great. I used to work as a paralegal for a long time. I was out of legal for a little more than 8 years. It feels great to be back. Never thought I would feel this way, but i think I had to go through all the difficulty of the past 8 months. Everything just fit perfectly.

Thanks for your kind words. They mean tons

  22. Hello, my Friend!

I'm SO SORRY I missed your call. Can we try again soon?

I went and had my nails done yesterday.. what a TREAT! It was the first time I've done that since last year just before we came to see you. I'd LOVE to have it done weekly, but I just can't justify paying someone to do something that I can do for myself for FREE! (Well, it DOES look a lot better when SHE does it.. ha!)

We'll be having church here on Sunday. (We're doing a "sunrise service" here, then a pancake breakfast afterwards) It'll be FUN, but you know me.. I wanna get some things done before our friends come over. (They're really more like family and don't expect any extra trouble.. but I like to try to make things extra special when we have folks over)

I guess all of that to say that if I don't "see you" online again before Sunday, I hope you have a VERY HAPPY and VERY BLESSED Easter!

I LOVE & MISS YOU BUNCHES, Sweet Friend

  25. This a wonderful post!

I love the idea of being clothed with His righteousness... I do think about that concept quite a lot. (Maybe because I like clothes and style!)

I look forward to the great day when I will wear an uncorruptable body... because of what HE has done.

Have a blessed Easter, Susan. Love you!

  29. It's funny, just as I'm sitting here with my laptop, we're watching the movie "The Robe", which we do every Good Friday. Unfortunately, it doesn't truly grasp what really happened at Calvary. This wonderful post is such an expression of what the cross was all about. Blessings to you and yours as we celebrate all that happened on Friday and Sunday.

  30. This is very long but on this day of all days it's worth reading in it's entirety. Know that I'm always praying!
Isaiah 53:1-12 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
